This educational course will provide a comprehensive overview of one of the most effective therapies in all of medicine: epilepsy surgery. Featuring a variety of speakers from a diversity of backgrounds and geographical practice locations, the course will creatively explore what epilepsy surgery options are available, whom to refer for epilepsy surgery evaluation, what to expect for a patient after referral, and how epilepsy pre-surgical evaluation is performed. The course will appeal to a wide range of conference attendees by reviewing basic concepts for trainees wanting to learn about the surgical treatment of epilepsy, while also featuring advanced elements to update established practitioners on how epilepsy surgery and pre-surgical evaluation has been radically transformed since the turn of the millennium nearly a quarter-century ago.

Learning Objectives:

  • Outline how the armamentarium available for epilepsy surgeries has advanced and modernized into 2024.
  • Demonstrate practical operational knowledge of when to refer patients for epilepsy surgery in the resource-limited Canadian practice environment.
  • Identify when and how patients undergo invasive EEG using modern techniques that have evolved since the turn of the millennium.
  • Recognize when and how cortical stimulation is performed in modern epilepsy pre-surgical evaluation.
