This session seeks to shed light on the often underexplored and clinically challenging domain of Atypical Parkinsonian Syndromes (APS). These conditions, including Multiple System Atrophy, Dementia with Lewy bodies, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, and Corticobasal Degeneration, present unique diagnostic and management complexities that warrant comprehensive attention. Despite their growing significance, educational opportunities specifically focusing on APS are often limited. This session aims to address this gap by offering an inclusive and informative platform dedicated to enhancing the knowledge and skills of neurology healthcare professionals involved in caring for patients with APS.

Learning Objectives:

  • At the end of the session, participants will develop a comprehensive understanding of the key clinical features that distinguish Atypical Parkinsonian Syndromes (APS) from idiopathic Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders by learning a structured diagnostic approach, including the implementation of appropriate diagnostic tools such as neuroimaging and biomarkers.
  • Participants will gain insights into the pathophysiological basis of tauopathies, recognizing the clinical manifestations and distinct features of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) and Corticobasal Degeneration (CBD), with a focus on pathology and management strategies.
  • Attendees will acquire a deep understanding of non-Parkinson's disease alpha-synuclein disorders, Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) and Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) and will be able to identify the clinical features and apply therapeutic approaches for their management.
