This is a high yield, best evidence review course to update practitioners on key concepts in the management of pregnancy and neurological diseases specifically pre-conception, pregnancy and post-partum care. This review course will highlight the natural history, therapeutic considerations, maternal and fetal risks as well as post-partum care (breastfeeding and maternal and infant safety) in epilepsy, stroke, multiple sclerosis, and pain. The audience will also be updated on emerging research in this field.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the emerging field of obstetrical neurology and highlight challenges faced in the management of neurologic disorders in pregnancy
  • Demonstrate the role of neurologists in reducing maternal morbidity and mortality
  • Develop an approach to pregnancy planning in MS, epilepsy and stroke with an understanding of expected disease course in pregnancy
  • Understand appropriate use of neurological drugs and therapies in pregnancy including disease modifying therapies in MS, antiseizure medications, and acute stroke care.
  • Review post-partum care including risk factors for disease exacerbation and safety of neurological drugs in lactation
  • Discuss the implementation of an interdisciplinary care model and introduce a novel shared-decision model platform for pregnancy care in neurological disease: the Women's Health Evidence-Based (WHEN) platform.
