Innovation and entrepreneurship are increasingly recognized by individuals and institutions as essential in the creation of products of economic and societal value. This course will review fundamental concepts in developing an early concept or academic research project, towards commercialization. Experts with practical knowledge in entrepreneurship, law, and intellectual property will share their foundational knowledge and experiences.

Learning Objectives:

  • At the end of this session, participants will be able to appreciate the personal and professional opportunities and challenges of transitioning a project towards commercialization.
  • At the end of this session, participants will be able to understand the legal basics of incorporation and structuring a start-up in the life sciences, with a focus on Canadian law while recognizing future cross-border considerations.
  • At the end of this session, participants will be able to gain an appreciation of intellectual property (IP), the value of IP in financing, commercialization, and acquisition, the patent application process in the US and worldwide, and how to manage risk posed by third party IP.
