In this combined session of central and peripheral electrophysiology the participant will gain a deeper understanding of the role of NCS/EMG in the management of chronic myofascial pain and neuromuscular disease. Attendees will also learn about the role of deep brain stimulation (DBS) in the management of drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) and the role of cortical and subcortical nodes in the DBS network. The learner will also come to appreciate the utility of magnetoencephalography in the pre-surgical work-up of DRE.

Learning Objectives:

To understand the effectiveness of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) in reducing seizures in drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE), focusing on the anterior thalamic nucleus (ANT), centromedian thalamic nucleus (CMT), and hippocampus.
To Learn about the cortical and subcortical nodes involved in the epilepsy DBS network. (a) Recognize the implications of cortical clusters corresponding to resting state networks and volumetric changes in various cortical regions as they relate to DBS in epilepsy (b) Appreciate the significance of the anterior thalamic nucleus as a central hub in the epilepsy DBS network.
To describe the fundamentals, use, and precision of magnetoencephalography (MEG) in the presurgical investigation of DRE and to appreciate the differences between inverse source localization techniques to non-invasively model interictal spike foci and seizures and to understand when source modeling of interictal spikes may provide sufficient information to proceed directly to epilepsy surgery.
To describe autoantibodies identified in myasthenia gravis, and distinguish among test methodologies for their detection (radioimmunoassay, fixed cell-based assay, live cell-based assay) that have been incorporated into modern diagnostic algorithms
Identify conditions in which EDx is likely to change management, and which conditions it is less likely to contribute to management decisions in
Review which patients with polyneuropathy it is most important to obtain prompt EDX in and which are potentially deferable and discuss when repeat EDx studies are likely to be helpful
